The highest scoring ace of the European theater Col. Frances Gabby Gabreski flew his P-47D with Zemke's Wolfpack winning 28 aerial victories. Just before heading stateside for a well-earned leave he took one more mission. During a strafing pass his plane faltered causing him to crash. After days of evasion he was captured and made a POW. Surviving that ordeal he later went on to fight in the Korean War. Gabreski eventually retired and was known as America's highest scoring ace.
