Stellar performer!Dobsonian telescopes are recognized within the amateur astronomy community as offering an excellent value for the aperture size and Celestron's StarHopper is one of the best.The Dobsonian configuration is a Newtonian optical tube equipped with an altazimuth mount. The heart of the optical system is a large primary mirror at the tube bottom that collects light from stars and planets and concentrates it onto a small secondary mirror. This in turn reflects the light out the side of the tube and into an eyepiece for the observer to study. It's a simple optical design of proven ability.What distinguishes a Celestron Dobsonian from other Newtonians is really its mount. The StarHopper's is a straightforward altazimuth system featuring a roller-track bearing on the azimuth surface. This offers dozens of support points to provide a smooth swiveling motion. There's also a variable-tension clutch system for good balance and control in both altitude and azimuth. And all of this makes Celestron's Dobsonians easy to observe withthe user navigates through the night sky by simply moving the tube up or down left or right and all by hand. It's the same type of mount used by thousands of sidewalk astronomers.The 10-inch StarHopper also uses optical-quality BK-7 glass and a nine-point flotation cell to ensure stability of its primary mirror. There's a cooling fan built into the rear cell too to decrease cooling times.
